Organizational History: See Description in beginning
Position Description: The products of Xelabaj are currently marketed within Casa Xelajú and internationally, through the Internet (www.casaxelaju.com/xelabaj). However, oftentimes this market cannot sustain the production costs that they face monthly. Xelabaj needs to expand their market locally and globally in order to increase their profit margin and bring economic growth to their community. The task of the Marketing Management Mentor will be to help facilitate that goal.
Responsibilities will be two-fold: First, she or he will be responsible for developing an affective marketing strategy for Xelabaj’s products, both in Guatemala and internationally. This will entail maintaining existing markets and expanding into new areas, using an innovative and creative approach. New channels should be explored like bulletins, web communities, newspapers, magazine coverage, etc. Part of this responsibility would include identifying potential client groups and creating advertising schemes (through the Internet, local advertisements, and individual letters) to reach them. Second, the Marketing Mentor will be responsible for creating a comprehensive approach to marketing that can be used by future Mentors and by Xelabaj itself. This would entail educating the women in the principles of business image and expansion, as well as training one or two individual women to fill the position of Marketing Mentor in the future. Our main goal is to give the women of Xelabaj the skills and motivation to sustain and develop their own enterprise in the future.

Organizational History: See Description at beginning

Position Description: All young small businesses need initial investments to develop and flourish. However, in Guatemala, there is little to no support from the Government or other sources for much-needed funding. The women of Xelabaj have managed to form a working venture with their own determination and the support of Casa Xelajú. However, with Xelabaj’s new start-up and sustainability expenses, they have an urgent need for an initial infusion of capital. They need in-kind donations, other donations or grants. They need a digital camera, scanner, 2 industrial sewing machines, money for electricity, as well as money for professional sewing and design trainers. The job of the Fundraising Mentor is to search out new avenues of funding and obtaining resources for Xelabaj, through grants, local and international fundraising activities, company donations, and any other creative means of procuring capital.

The responsibilities of the Mentor will be two-fold: First, she or he will develop a comprehensive approach to raising funds and resources. This could be achieved by searching out company sponsorship, internet fundraising, contacting previous volunteers to host benefit dinners in their hometowns, grants, support from college and university organizations, or local fundraising events. With the help of the women in Xelabaj and other internst, she or he will establish a target level of funding to be achieved during her or his stay and actively work to achieve this goal.

Second, the Fundraising Mentor will be responsible for developing a fund- and resource-raising plan for future volunteers and for the Xelabaj itself. This would entail a personal account of one's own experience (in terms of what worked and what didn't), an extensive contact list (of companies, grant foundations, individuals, etc.), guidelines for grant-writing (from personal and external sources), an account of funds raised, goals for future projects, and any other useful and practical information. In addition, the Mentor would train one or two women from Xelabaj in the skill of fund- and resource-raising, and assist in creating a committee for the Governing Board to focus on these issues. This is a great opportunity to develop grant-writing skills, gain experience in non-profit/small business fundraising, meet interesting people, and to help the Xelajab achieve its dreams!

kerrkathleen@hotmail.com 294-7454 13 Av 8-43, Zona 3 (home of the directora) Señora Herrera Amparo Kate Kerr (exvolunteer) katekerr@yahoo.com Organizational History: Xelabaj began on April 13, 1998 as a workshop to teach women how to sew their own clothes. The workshop started with 6 sewing machines, 26 women and one instructor. The following October, after 6 months of lessons, several of the women decided to learn how to manufacture and sell clothing to students and tourists in Quetzaltenango in order to improve their economic situation. For their first year and a half, the women of Xelabaj worked without salary. They reinvested the profits from their sales back into Xelabaj to facilitate its growth and development. With the help of volunteers, they continued to develop their product line, learn basic business practices, established accounting and inventory systems, and began advertising in local cafes and hotels frequented by students and tourists. After three years in existence, they have developed their skills in sewing. Today Xelabaj consists of 7 women. The majority of the women have had no formal job experience and Xelabaj represents their first opportunity to participate in an educational and professional environment. Position Description:
The Project Start-up Coordinator will be responsible for developing and implementing, with the local rural community health commitee, a program to find potential surgery candidates and spreading awareness of this program in the Quetzaltenango region. There are three main aspects to this position. First, the Coordinator would be responsible for traveling to local pueblos and meeting with community groups, local government, individuals, schools, etc., and when there are none of these groups available, organize a local community health commitee to find groups to send to the hospital in Antigua. This includes developing basic profiles on each candidate, arranging transport, accompanying each group to and from Antigua, making arrangements with the hospital for appointments and surgery dates, and working independently and with the social services division of the hospital to arrange for transport, housing, and food costs for each patient. The Coordinator will have the opportunity to spend a large amount of their time in the rural indigenous communities of Quetzaltenango, as well as work almost completely in Spanish.

Second, the Coordinator will be responsible for carrying out fundraisers and searching for funds to help support the costs for transport, room, and board of each person who travels to Antigua for surgery. While the social service division offers a number of rooms in Antigua for free, as well as support for transportation and food, we feel it is important to do what we can to help cover the costs, and therefore give opportunities to more in need. Fundraising would be done locally as well as internationally to reach a broader donation base. This will include expanding the Coordinator's program to the internet, through discussion groups (see http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pedrera for example), an internet page, and other means for reaching funding sources and sharing the benefits this program offers.

Third, the Coordinator will be responsible for developing a sustainable program that continues to inform the populace of this remarkable opportunity in the future. This could be attained in many ways. Some key aspects of this element include an extensive advertising program, local health seminars in schools and communities, coordinating activities and sharing knowledge with local social organizations and other groups, and going out and talking to community members. In addition, the Coordinator will be responsible for creating a comprehensive plan for future volunteers to follow and add to, including contacts, long-term goals, past accomplishments, number and names of patients who participated, and other useful information. The main goal is to create a program that not only helps those in need now, but also allows future candidates access to the knowledge and resources they need to obtain surgery at Hermano Pedro.

The position of Program Start-up Coordinator will be very challenging, but also incredibly rewarding! The Coordinator will have the chance to work mainly with the indigenous Maya in the Xela region, and forge lasting relationships with members of these communities. The chance to see automatic results is rare in development projects, where results often take months or years. The Coordinator will be seeing the results of their work daily. Seeing the smile of a child after they have had their cleft lip corrected will make this position a lasting and incredible experience for the person who fills this position!
claudia@casaxelaju.com http://www.c.net.gt/hpedro Claudia Hermano Pedro (Antigua, Guatemala) is a comprehensive, Catholic-based center providing low-cost and free medical care, education, nursing homes for the elderly, residence for orphaned and abandoned children, daycare for poor working mothers with children, physical and occupational therapy for the physically and mentally handicapped, and many other programs aimed towards benefiting the impoverished populations of Guatemala. Started in 1980 by Friar Guillermo Bonilla, the organization has helped thousands of Guatemalans to gain access to services unattainable to their economic group, and create better lives for themselves and their communities. The programs are all non-profit and are maintained mainly by donations.

One of Hermano Pedro's many projects brings international doctors to the clinic to perform all types of surgery (excluding life threatening, such as open heart surgery). Doctors have come from Italy, Spain, Canada, the US, and many other countries from around the world. Depending on the policies of the groups of doctors, the surgeries are either free or offered for a small charge (to help with the costs of materials) and many times, if a group of 10 individuals who need surgery can be gathered, all their costs will be covered by the organization. Hermano Pedro's goal is for this program to be used by all Guatemalans, but in the past, they have had trouble spreading the word of this incredible opportunity outside of the Antigua region.

InterAlianza is cooperating with both communities, utilizing a three-pronged strategy in order to address the problem:
1) Helping to mitigate the effects of unsustainable tree-cutting practices, i.e. guarding against further erosion; averting the destruction of ecosystems, the loss of farmland and the contamination of water and the depletion of underground water sources
2) Helping to change unsustainable tree-harvesting practices
3) Helping fund and manage a tree cultivation and replanting program, which provides education and advice to local communities and is producing enough trees to regenerate deforested areas in addition to replacing trees that are being harvested presently.

From June to September 2001 the clowns toured 15 communities, stopping for a month at the height of the rainy season, when drawing a crowd to an outdoor event gets more difficult. In all the communities we visited we have carried out in-depth awareness workshops with groups, in Spanish and Mayan languages. We have reached, either through the show or the workshops, just under 10,000 people of all ages, and distributed and left behind condoms, fliers and other visual material we have been able to identify. We believe we have also stimulated both public discussion and increased access by residents to their health services.
At all we toured in over 70 communities all over the country, including villages, towns, prisons, fincas and border areas with Mexico and Honduras.

Prior to the formation of UTQ, labor unions in the Southern and Western departments of Guatemala were affiliated in the Frente de Trabajadores, known by the acronym, FETRASO. FETRASO fostered solidarity activities amongst its member unions, offering counsel and support in the fight to improve working conditions and wages in the region. As well, FETRASO offered a platform from which its members could voice their concerns on a national level. The wave of violence and repression directed against popular movements at the start of the 1980s effectively destroyed FETRASO. Much of its leadership was either killed or forced into exile. Those who remained in Guatemala limited themselves to working within their individual unions.

UTQ
In this climate of political repression, and in the spirit of FETRASO, three existing unions integrated themselves into a single organization.

Its founders intended UTQ to be an organization dedicated to interpreting the marginalized and exploited sectors of Guatemalan society; an organization dedicated to protecting the rights of Guatemalan workers. Towards this goal, UTQ now includes over 30 affiliated members, including labor unions, community groups, and cultural organizations with a membership of over 10,000 men and women. Based in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala’s second largest city, UTQ is the largest labor organization outside the capital.
STRUCTURE
UTQ is directed by a coordinating group, which consists of 12 coordinating posts. Each coordinating post is held by a representative of an affiliated organization.

To achieve its initial objectives and to adress emerging problems, UTQ has realized the following activities:
EMPOWERMENT
Through the Ernesto Che Guevara School of Coordination and Planning, formed in 1992, UTQ has implemented regular workshops, seminars and conferences to develop leadership and participation among union members. The School of Coordination and Planning is also used as a forum for community meetings, opening its doors to various citizen groups who seek a space to discuss a variety of political, economic, social, cultural themes.

MOBILIZATION
In the years following the peace accords, UTQ has been involved in the continuing struggle to realize a more democratic Guatemala. Towards this goal, UTQ has employed a strategy of popular protest.

UTQ played a critical role in the general strikes against the privatization of hospital, education, and mail services in 1994. In 2001, UTQ led pickets and demonstrations in protest of the 12% increase in the aggregate value tax, a fiscal policy that unfairly burdened working families. Currently, UTQ has staged protests to establish a town meeting with the mayor of Quetzaltenango and other Municipal Officers to insure transparency and fiscal responsibility in the departamental government.

In addition, UTQ organizes annual marches to commemorate International Woman’s Day (March 8th), International Labor Day (May 1st), Universal Human Rights Day (September 10th), and the Revolution of 1944 (October 20th).

UTQ participates in unscheduled manifestations and demonstrations in response to the needs of its membership.

LEGAL AFFAIRS
UTQ’s Asesoria Juridica office fights to protect the legal rights of Guatemalan workers, The Asesoria Juridica staff of two layers provides free legal services to UTQ members, representing their interests in court over disputes with employers, unjustified layoffs, collection of back-pay.

The Asesoria Juridica office also participates in the organization of new unions. The Juridica draws up the legal framework to register new unions in full accordance with International Code of Labor, of the International Organization of Labor, and the Guatemalan Ministry of Labor as mandated by the Guatemalan Constitution.

INFORMATION
Voces de UTQ, a monthly newspaper, informs UTQ’s affiliates and the community at large of relevant issues and happenings in the labor community. By providing updates from the various coordinating posts, Voces de UTQ keeps members updated as to the activities and concerns of their unions.

UTQ houses the Carlos Borromeo Sacalxot Center of Documentation and Archive, a facility that provides historical and political information to workers, students, and the community at large.

HEALTH-WOMEN SERVICES
Through La Oficina de Mujer, UTQ administers an Infant Care program that provides shelter for children of single mother households who lack sufficient economic resources. As well UTQ sponsors a medical clinic and farmacy for citizens of Quetzaltenango who can not afford medical coverage.

Position Description:
Interns and volunteers will work with a local veterinarian to develop one of three new projects which have been his dream for years. These projects are:

1) Developing the first animal refuge in Xela

Developing a business model for the refuge (a viable, marketable plan); creating the policies, management system, and organizational structure of the refuge in a self-sustainable format, along with a program for animal adoption, animal care, discounted spaying and neutering of all animals, etc.

Create a written presentation on the project and submit to various international organizations (Dr. Ricardo is already working on one which interns and volunteers would finish)

Fundraising

Searching for funding, donations in your home country before you leave to come to Guatemala (from veterinary clinics, private donors, and organizations concerned with the environment or humane treatment of animals)

Searching for funding/ fundraising through benefit dinners, grants while in Guatemala

Marketing

Create a marketing strategy and propaganda (posters/flyers, radio, newspapers, TV)

Working to raise international awareness of the problem and potential solutions

Working to raise local knowledge about the shelter and its goals, the importance of spaying or neutering pets, and classes on pet care and health)

Implementation
Facilitate the renting of space for the Refuge and the design of areas for various animals
Facilitating an "adopt a street dog/cat" program, etc.

Helping to find a location and staff for the refuge on a limited budget

Providing care for refuge animals, including assisting the vet in their medical care (no knowledge necessary), feeding, cleaning, providing a lot of love and care, keeping their living space habitable and comfortable, etc.

Note: The Refuge will be equiped to handle as many types of animals as possible, from abandoned dogs who have been living on the street to wounded reptiles, birds, etc. Many animals lose their habitat in the surrounding moutain forests when forest fires rage during the dry season. Workers will concentrate a part of their efforts on environmental issues.

2) Working towards a new schema of animal control in Guatemala, starting with the city of Xela

Lobbying for changes in local government policy (right now the government pays for the
systematic massacre of all stray dogs and cats every year to prevent the spread of disease. 200 were recently killed in Xela. A spaying and neutering program is humane and more cost effective in the long run)

Educating the public of the cost savings of spaying and neutering over systematic mass murder of strays

Educating the local populace on the cost savings (in vet's bills, etc.) and responsibility to spay
and neuter their own animals

Building strategic relationships with local leaders

Searching for funding to implement the new project/ fundraising efforts

Working to raise international awareness of the problem and potential solutions

Implementing the new project in conjunction with local vets

3) Partnering with the local Xela zoo to assist in relieving its current economic crisis and to ensure the humane treatment of animals now and in the future

Fundraising/searching for funding (right now loss of government funding means the animals
are not receiving enough medical attention, food, sanitation, etc.)

Working to change immediate conditions for zoo animals through fundraising, "adopt an animal" program, grants, educational tours, and other means.

Working to change government policies where they result in the mistreatment of animals (writing and presenting proposals to the Municipality, etc.)

Building strategic relationships with local leaders

Finding ways the Refuge and zoo can collaborate in times of need and implementing such a program
Working to raise international awareness of the problem and potential solutions

Developing a program for community awareness to prevent future economic crisis resulting in mistreated animals. This includes educating the populace (in schools, community centers, through group fieldtrips to the zoo with an educated tour guide, etc.)

Helping to develop a program at the zoo that focuses on education for the public on the conservation of natural environments, the importance of assisting endangered species, breeding programs, any other topics to be determined.

After the Refuge planning and implementation stages are complete, interns and volunteers will be recruited to work on the zoology and humane animal control projects. Intern and volunteers who begin with the Refuge project will work in a variety of areas which may include some elements from the two future projects.
