Founded by artist Rolando Aguilar in 1991 Danza Maya aims to revive, investigate and diffuse traditional mayan dance, through expositions and workshops. Wasshaquib Batz' means eight thread or eight monkeys and signifies the first day of the sacred year of development. Danza Maya is funded completely through its administrators, through the tuition of workshops and through entrance fees to expositions.

Why did Danza Maya arise?
1. For the necesity of expression of the Mayan pueblo via art and culture
2. To investigate indentity issues
3. To create a social, cultural and educative space for local youth

Mission:
Más que estampas folklóricas es la incoproración de los elementos de la Madre Tierra para la expresión de las sentimientos del ser humano; es la historia de las manifestaciones contemporáneas artístico-corporales cuyas raices se encuentran en el proyecto civiliatorio de nuestra milenaria Cultura Maya; es también la incorporación de la riqueza creativa tradicional a los recursos técnicos y modernos que se plasman en la poesía, la danza, la música, el teatro y la historia.
