Founded in 1992.
Empowering Q'eqchi' communities (9000 Q'eqchi' in 45 villages) by improving access to basic healthcare, education and alternative income sources. The facilities include a 24-hour primary healthcare facility, a floating dental clinic, primary school, training centers, sleeping and dining facilities, an organic garden and area for fish-farming. Developed an eco-tourism project wirh nature trails, a restaurant, bakery and gift shop. While money from the restaurant and bakery go directly to support the project, the gift shop works with Ak' Tenamit established artisan cooperatives to provide a product outlet. The Ak Tenamit clinic is located in the rainforest of southeastern Guatemala and serve the native Mayans of the region who are subsistance farmers and fishermen. The walk in clinic is open six days a week and for emergencies 24/7. They often suture machete wounds and treat dehydration. They deliver about 80 babies a year. About half of the patients are children with common problems of diarrhea, pnemonia, and skin diseases. |
