Country That Loves Bees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>by Diana Pastor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other side of the Atlantic along the coastal areas of the Baltic Sea one encounters a country about the size of Guatemala but with a population eight times smaller.\u00a0 Lithuania, a country not well-known in Latin America but which features, among other distinctions, being famous for offering high quality life to bees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Significant records re: bees in Lithuania date the first beekeeping activities back to the 13th century.\u00a0 The evidence is based on the issuance of the first documents regarding rights of beekeepers and protection for trees where honey is produced.\u00a0 \u00a0By the 15th century, generally considered to be governed by community norms, destruction of a hive or stealing honey was punished with fines and other penalties. \u00a0But this relationship between bees and humans has even older origins.\u00a0 In Lithuania mythology there are two deities associated with bees:\u00a0 Bubilas and Austja.\u00a0 They are complementary one to the other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.entremundos.org\/revista\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/fotos-articulo-2.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10036 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.entremundos.org\/revista\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/fotos-articulo-2.jpg?resize=300%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" people value the benefits that bees contribute to their lives, so bees are considered worthy of much respect.\u00a0 Lithuanians know that these little animals are the most important in the world because of their contribution to food supplies.\u00a0 Bees are responsible for the pollination of diverse species of eatable plants equal to 35 % of food production world-wide.\u00a0 And all of this pollination is done without transmitting any pathogen such as bacteria, fungi or viruses to those foodstuffs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Lithuania products derived from bees are widely utilized in food preparation and as therapeutic treatments for illnesses.\u00a0 For these reasons and others, Lithuanians consider the bee to be a symbol of friendship.\u00a0 In Lithuania the saying is, \u00abA bee is like a friend and a friend is like bee.\u00bb\u00a0 Perhaps due to this relationship the species of bees living in this country are considered to be particularly docile according to the Lithuanian Academy of Veterinarian Sciences.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than a few Lithuanians have their own hives.\u00a0 Some even have expanded beyond their own backyards.\u00a0 For example, recently the employees of a pharmaceutical discussed the possibility of activity that would strengthen relationship between workers and improve teamwork.\u00a0 The result?\u00a0 They created an apiary which had to be attended to by all.\u00a0 It not only yielded honey, but also, reduced stress.\u00a0 And once the bees had pollinated flowers found there, it beautified their work place as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.entremundos.org\/revista\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/fotos-articulo-2-3.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10038\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.entremundos.org\/revista\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/fotos-articulo-2-3.jpg?resize=225%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" people don&#8217;t have prejudices against bees nor do they consider them to be inferior\u00a0because they are insects.\u00a0 In fact, they consider them to be very intelligent.\u00a0 This idea is supported by an article published in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal Sentience<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which discusses the complex system of neurons bees have allowing them to alert one another when they&#8217;ve found a food resource far from the hive (known as the dance of the bees).\u00a0 With this nervous system they can also tell direction, distances from flowers, water and other hives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Lithuania has a cultural tradition of cohabitation with bees, protection for them has had its challenges.\u00a0 For example, the use of pesticides must be prohibited in agriculture because they are detrimental to the survival of bees.\u00a0 And the number of\u00a0 beekeepers has diminished among younger generations.\u00a0 Nevertheless, the Lithuanians have learned about harmony, diligence and teamwork from bees and have introduced these values into their way of life.\u00a0 Because this wisdom has been part of their culture for the last 100 years, it won&#8217;t be easily lost.\u00a0 The relationship that Lithuania has with bees can be an example for other countries to
