tragedy that isn\u2019t talked about"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lives silenced, a tragedy that isn\u2019t talked about, is a study from the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO), that exposes the link between suicide and pregnancy in adolescent women.\u00a0 It was presented for the first time in August 2019, and in 2021 the second edition was produced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Esperanza was a 16-year-old adolescent, living in a home with many precarious conditions.\u00a0 But that didn\u2019t stop her from looking forward to high school graduation.\u00a0 The graduation came, but she wasn\u2019t there.\u00a0 She ingested phostoxin (a fumigant to control pests in stored grains) and she committed suicide when she was eight months pregnant.\u00a0 It\u2019s assumed that the stepfather raped her and is the father of her daughter.\u00a0 The girl survived, has brain damage, no speech, and limited motor development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Esperanza\u2019s suicide isn\u2019t unique.\u00a0 Flor was 15 years old when she hung herself with a noose from a beam in the room where she lived with her parents.\u00a0 She was seven months pregnant, and wasn&#8217;t noticed.\u00a0 People around her didn\u2019t know who the baby\u2019s father was.\u00a0 They remember that she liked a gym teacher that no longer works at the school.\u00a0 The fifteen-year-old was studying third grade elementary and wanted to be a teacher or a nurse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nadia was a third-grade student, a young q\u2019eqchi\u2019, surviving poverty and the consequences of sexual violence.\u00a0 The brother-in-law, husband of her older sister, raped and impregnated her.\u00a0 Nadia never told anyone what she\u2019d suffered, until she decided to commit suicide.\u00a0 The aggressor threatened to kill her sister.\u00a0 Before she poisoned herself she went to a healer for an abortion, but she continued to feel bad and committed suicide.\u00a0 Her case was denounced to the Public Ministry but the complaint was dismissed because \u201cthere is no crime to prosecute\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.entremundos.org\/revista\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/paint-2-1.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10092\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.entremundos.org\/revista\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/paint-2-1.png?resize=315%2C428&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"315\" height=\"428\" https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.entremundos.org\/revista\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/paint-2-1.png?resize=221%2C300&amp;ssl=1 221w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Esperanza, Flor and Nadia were born in Guatemala.\u00a0 Their stories are part of the study that exposes the relation between suicide and forced, unwanted, or unplanned pregnancy.\u00a0 \u201cSuicide is a tragedy that needs to be made known so that it leaves the private sphere and is recognized as a social problem\u201d, the document states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicide related to pregnancy occurs during gestation and up to a year after birth.\u00a0 The study mentions that a pregnant adolescent has a risk of suicide up to 3 times highter than non-pregnant adolescents due to the exposure to violence, stigma, sexual violence, the lack of alternatives from the interference in their life dreams and the penalization of abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, pregnancies from sexual violence interrupt a woman\u2019s life hopes and dreams.\u00a0 This provokes the presence of anxiety, depression, a sensation of being imprisoned.\u00a0 Add to that the depression that generally accompanies these pregnancies negatively affects overall health and quality of life, limits the development of dreams, studies and work possibilities.\u00a0 This is how a scenario of risk for the idea of suicide is generated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emma L\u00f3pez, member FLACSO\u2019S Gender and Studies Program says that the problem has been silenced, as suicide can\u2019t be talked about in all places due to the taboos surrounding it.\u00a0 Of the 14 cases that are part of the study, eight reflect evidence of sexual violence.\u00a0 \u201cThere\u2019s no follow up to seek justice in these cases.\u00a0 With the death, any possibility of evidence to prosecute dies\u201d, explains Emma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study also shows that, although maternal death by suicide is recognized internationally, the Ministry of Health in Guatemala still hasn\u2019t implemented a registry for these cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWho\u2019s talking about and investigating this?\u00a0 What information is provided to university students in medicine, psychology and psychiatry?\u00a0 Also, there are recommendations for the ministry of agriculture, because one of the most common ways of committing suicide among adolesents is poisoning, by using phostoxin, better known as the pill to cure corn.\u00a0 How is this access regulated?\u00a0 In the majority of cases the victims were active students, so the question for the Ministry of Education is, What is the response that could be given through comprehensive sex education? for example\u201d, said
