As a society, we have normalized these types of actions, as reporting the violence is not always an option; this shows us that if women are being abused, they view it as something that they cannot change. Some of the factors impeding them from filing a report are the bureaucracy of investigations, and the lack of knowledge, counsel, and guidance when it comes to follow-ups for reports. The list of why not’s that we could mention is endless. Meanwhile, those who do turn to authorities have to wait out a long process that rather than bringing them peace, gives them the uncertainty of not knowing whether the perpetrator will be arrested.

Throughout the country and in various regions are nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and institutions like the Centros de apoyo integral para mujeres sobrevivientes de violencia, or CAIMUS (integral support centers for female survivors of violence), which are dedicated to defending and advocating for women’s rights. And this is the work carried out by the Ixoq Chajib’al Ja Women’s Home Associaton, which promotes and helps make demands for the human rights of the Maya women in the Solalá region, building a fairer, equitable society free from domestic violence .
In this article, guided by the Women’s Home, we address that same subject in order to inform and train women on the prevention of violence, and the journey towards filing a report.

Andrea Morales, from the Women’s Home, explains to us how violence and discrimination affect the lives of women, including indigenous women, on both the individual and collective level. Individually, violence and discrimination generate physical and emotionalconditions in the women affected that make it impossible for them to make decisions.

Psychologically, they continue losing the strength and energy to handle the situation, and over time, they normalize the violence, exposing themselves to all kinds of aggressions, which on a physical level, compromise their health.

Indigenous women suffer the most violation of their rights. As as our discriminatory society denies them the opportunity to improve their life and exercise their rights, they lack institutions that can provide them with care in their mother tongue, and that respect thier beliefs and conditions.
On the collective level, in rural communities, the belief still persists that women must care for the home; because of this, neither their families nor their community organizations give them space to participate or make decisions. Since childhood, they were inculcated to think that they should not be involved in decision-making spacies, leading them to fear doing so. For this reason, the majority of communitary authorities are composed only of men. This is a pattern that repeats in various places and communities.

Faced with these situations, we must make efforts towards significant and progressive change. Among the actions or changes that we should make as a society to reduce or completely avoid these calamities is the creation of public policies, from the municipalities, that generate wellbeing and security among the women of the community, while carrying out projects with key themes to support women in empowering themselves to escape a violent situation, Morales explains.

Within the communities, we must forge and create spaces of direct assistance to women, which should prioritize the women’s basic necessities and empower them to have an impact on the decision-making in their community. But this must be done from the women’s hearts, and we must listen to them, she argues.

What important achievements can we highlight from the community and its organizational work and events that they plan with the organization? Faced with this quesion, Andrea responds that the work completed with the human-rights defenders who guide abused women from the farthest communities, and who coordinate follow-up cases, is already an achievement. Women’s lives are impacted by the economic empowerment they gain through the courses they are taught, allowing them to start a business that provides them with economic income and their own independence. Still, everything is a process and change of mentality.
