He entered a Saudi consulate in Turkey to pick up legal documents that would allow him to marry his fianc\u00e9e. He never left. Turkish authorities claim to have recordings that prove he was tortured, killed and dismembered by Saudi officials in the consulate.<\/p>\n<p>Khashoggi&#8217;s murder has provoked a storm of criticism in the US. Others, like several House Republicans, have begun a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/powerpost\/conservatives-mount-a-whisper-campaign-smearing-khashoggi-in-defense-of-trump\/2018\/10\/18\/feb92bd0-d306-11e8-b2d2-f397227b43f0_story.html?utm_term=.03c9f746df0c&amp;wpisrc=nl_most&amp;wpmm=1\">\u201cwhisper campaign\u201d<\/a> to defame Khashoggi as a terrorist sympathizer and so defend President Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Yet similar crimes linked to state security forces in Honduras draw no attention. In January 2017, television journalist Igor Padilla was gunned down by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/jul\/11\/honduran-journalist-killed-mexico-refugee-status\">four men in police uniforms<\/a>. The list goes on. Dozens of journalists have been killed in Honduras in recent years, including <a href=\"https:\/\/periodistas-es.com\/felap-al-menos-187-periodistas-latinos-asesinados-en-un-lustro86481-86481\">34 from 2012 to 2016<\/a>, according to the Latin American Federation of Journalists.<\/p>\n<p>The Committee to Protect Journalists <a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/reports\/2014\/09\/who-is-killing-central-americas-journalists-impunity-violence-murders-unsolved.php\">explains<\/a> that violence skyrocketed after a <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2017\/08\/29\/honduras-coup-us-defense-departmetnt-center-hemispheric-defense-studies-chds\/\">US-supported coup in 2009<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConditions in Honduras are more dire and the country presents its neighbor with a cautionary tale. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalwitness.org\/en\/campaigns\/environmental-activists\/honduras-deadliest-country-world-environmental-activism\/\">2017 Global Witness report<\/a> concluded:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than 120 people have died since 2010, according to Global Witness research. The victims were ordinary people who took a stand against dams, mines, logging or agriculture on their land \u2013 murdered by state forces, security guards or hired assassins. And yet the current president, Juan Orlando Hern\u00e1ndez, faced no institutional resistance when he changed the constitution and won a second term despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/dec\/18\/honduras-election-president-juan-orlando-hernandez-declared-winner-amid-unrest\">serious allegations of election fraud<\/a> in December 2017. Though the Organization of American States called for new elections, the US quickly recognized the results.<\/p>\n<p>As protests against the election gained strength, Honduran radio station Radio Progreso\u2019s antennae were sabotaged and it went off the air. The radio\u2019s director, <a href=\"https:\/\/circulodeperiodistas.cl\/honduras-periodistas-y-medios-de-comunicacion-tambien-en-peligro\/\">Jesuit Father Ismael Morena (pictured in the headline image), said<\/a>, \u201cWe\u2019re in a critical situation in this country. Radio Progreso has accompanied the voices that are questioning the election fraud and further denounces all the trampling of human rights by the current administration, which now seeks reelection. Two of her colleagues have since been killed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/jan\/31\/honduras-environmental-activists-global-witness-violence-berta-caceres\">increasing power of the Honduran elite<\/a> under successive post-coup administrations has wreaked havoc on the Honduran state and economy. This is why thousands of people flee Honduras for the US every month despite the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnestyusa.org\/most-dangerous-journey-what-central-american-migrants-face-when-they-try-to-cross-the-border\/\">journey&#8217;s grave dangers<\/a>.
