During the four and a half years I\u2019ve been making podcasts, I\u2019ve learned quite a few things about this interesting and relatively new form of communication called podcasting.\u00a0 It seems to have developed in direct response to what our times are demanding from us: dialogue.\u00a0 Our human need to communicate will never diminish.\u00a0 And especially at this particular moment we have a greater need to speak into existence solutions to the very difficult problems we are faced with.\u00a0 So it is an honor to share with you a little of what I\u2019ve learned about this very promising art form.\u00a0 Below is some technical information and practical tips that I hope will inspire and motivate you to create your own podcast.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is a Podcast?<\/span><\/h2>\n

The word podcast comes from <\/span>iPod<\/b>, the portable music playing device from Apple, and <\/span>broadcast<\/b>.\u00a0 Contrary to popular belief, a podcast is not simply any audio (or video) program downloaded or streamed from the internet.\u00a0 What makes a podcast unique is that it makes use of a method of <\/span>syndication.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The Early Days of Podcasting<\/span><\/h2>\n

When the world wide web was still in its infancy people were discovering ways of syndicating content from web pages and subscribing to a \u201cfeed\u201d so that you would automatically receive new articles as they became available.\u00a0 This method is known as <\/span>RSS, or Really Simple Syndication<\/b>.\u00a0 Applications called <\/span>feed readers<\/span><\/i> were developed, and thus the <\/span>blog<\/b> was born.\u00a0 In the early 2000s, former MTV veejay Adam Curry, known as \u201cthe Podfather\u201d, together with software developer Dave Winer worked together on software that expanded the idea of RSS to include audio files.\u00a0 This was known at the time as \u201caudio blogging\u201d.\u00a0 The software allowed audio content to be automatically downloaded and passed into Apple\u2019s iTunes music platform, and synced with an iPod.\u00a0 Suddenly the iPod was no longer just for music, and the podcast was hatched.<\/span><\/p>\n

Podcasting Today<\/span><\/h2>\n

Today, the smartphone has largely replaced the iPod and the popularity of podcasts has exploded.\u00a0 There are now over a million shows listed in Apple\u2019s directory, with over 30 million episodes as of April 2020.\u00a0 Half of all households in the U.S. have podcast listeners.\u00a0 What explains this popularity?\u00a0 The fact that podcasts are relatively easy and inexpensive to produce makes it very appealing to anyone who wants to share their message with a larger community.\u00a0 A podcast has the potential to reach anyone in the world who is connected to the internet and shares an interest in the same subject. Even though most podcasts are still downloaded in the U.S., we\u2019re beginning to see a rise in podcasting in Latin America and throughout other parts of the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

Martina Castro<\/b>, founder of <\/span>Adonde Media<\/b> has dedicated herself to promoting spanish language podcasts.\u00a0 She publishes an email newsletter called <\/span>Podcaster@s<\/b> featuring articles in spanish on the various aspects of podcasting.\u00a0 She\u2019s also written articles and given webinars.\u00a0 In a recent webinar called <\/span>How to Listen as a Podcast Producer<\/span><\/i> she identifies some of the more important elements of a an engaging podcast:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We can identify diverse elements in sound productions, for me they are five fundamental things that I like most, that inspire me most, and that draw my attention the most: rhythm, voice, tension, the script, and the use of sounds.\u00a0 If we can use effectively even one of these things with what we\u2019re producing, then we\u2019re going to engage the listener.<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

How to Make Your Own Podcast\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n

With a minimal investment in equipment and a commitment to your subject you can create your own podcast.\u00a0 Numerous tutorials are available on every aspect of creating your own podcast, from equipment, to creating artwork, to publishing.\u00a0 These tutorials will help guide you, but you will still need to answer many important questions, like: <\/span>How long will my podcast be?\u00a0 How often will I produce new episodes?\u00a0 Will I have a co-host?<\/span><\/i>\u00a0 Buzzsprout\u2019s step-by-step guide identifies 8 key areas that you need to consider: concept, format, equipment and software, recording, editing and uploading, artwork and categories, getting listed, and launching.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Tools of Podcasting<\/span><\/h2>\n

Over the course of the 4.5 years as a podcaster I\u2019ve come to rely on various free (or very low cost) tools to produce my podcast on Travelogue Media.\u00a0 <\/span>Audacity<\/b> is a free, open source, multi-platform <\/span>DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) <\/b>\u00a0that can adequately handle most recording and editing needs.\u00a0 <\/span>Auphonic<\/b> is a free, online post-production levelling and mastering service.\u00a0 This is highly recommended for those with little\u00a0 experience with audio engineering.\u00a0 Using Auphonic will help deliver audio files with a smoother, more consistent sound.\u00a0 <\/span>Archive.org<\/b> is where I normally store all finished audio files.\u00a0 It\u2019s recommended that you keep all your media files separate from your podcast website.\u00a0 Although it\u2019s not necessary to have a website for your podcast, it is generally recommended so that you maintain control over your own feed.\u00a0 Another tool I\u2019ve found indispensable is <\/span>Headliner<\/b>.\u00a0 This free online app is used to create video clips of your podcast to share on social media sites like Twitter and Instagram.<\/span><\/p>\n
