{"id":8512,"date":"2021-03-23T21:32:56","date_gmt":"2021-03-24T05:32:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.entremundos.org\/revista\/?p=8512"},"modified":"2021-03-23T21:32:56","modified_gmt":"2021-03-24T05:32:56","slug":"from-cartoons-to-writing-filochofo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.entremundos.org\/revista\/politics\/from-cartoons-to-writing-filochofo\/?lang=en","title":{"rendered":"From Cartoons to Writing | Fil\u00f3chofo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By EntreMundos<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Tell us a bit about yourself.\u00a0 Who is Jos\u00e9 Manuel Chac\u00f3n?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am a worker, just a regular guy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>How did the pseudonym Fil\u00f3chofo come about?\u00a0 Would you say Manuel Chac\u00f3n and Fil\u00f3chofo are two different people or one in the same?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s a show-off&#8217;s pseudonym from the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">philosophy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, made up in keeping with street- coloquial language.\u00a0 From there, it&#8217;s an alter ego.\u00a0 I&#8217;d like to say that it&#8217;s sort of like putting on Zorro&#8217;s mask to head out riding, although that also is a bit of a pretense.\u00a0 Actually, it&#8217;s quite different because we are not living in an Alice In Wonderland type country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>You are well-known for your books, e.g.<\/b><b><i> La Otra Historia <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(The Other History), <\/span><\/i><b><i>Retrato en Negro de los Medios de Comunicaci\u00f3n<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Picture in Black of Communications Media), <\/span><\/i><b><i>La Canci\u00f3n del Grillo <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(The Cricket&#8217;s Song), <\/span><\/i><b>among others, in which caricature is used to portray reality.\u00a0 And yet we are aware that you&#8217;ve published another novel, <\/b><b><i>Dos Yglesias <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Two Churches)<\/span><\/i> <b>which we&#8217;d like to know about:\u00a0 what has the transition been like, from caricature to the pure social-historic novel?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good question.\u00a0 The truth is that to be a cartoonist\/caricature artist is something that perhaps is born accidentally.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll try to explain with an example while maintaining some distance.\u00a0 Many of us admire the Cuban singer-song writer Silvio Rodriguez.\u00a0 Each of his compositions is a work of art.\u00a0 And few know that he is an excellent caricature artist.\u00a0 To write is more than a passion (as many like to describe it, turning it into a clich\u00e9).\u00a0 It is an emotional adventure.\u00a0 It&#8217;s always a risk, especially in our country.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>How did \u00abEl valle de los corazones vac\u00edos\u00bb <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Valley of the Empty Hearts) <\/span><\/i><b>come about and how much time did you spend working on it?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You speak accurately when mentioning the act of creating:\u00a0 a work that begins as catharis, then you put it away to age it, and then you should bring it out into the light, but you procrastinate.\u00a0 And then one day you decide to publish it.\u00a0 Yet the artistic scene in Guatemala continues the same.\u00a0 Novelists are confronted with many obstacles.\u00a0 To begin with, for many years there have been no institutions promoting literary events, except perhaps the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juegos Florales <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Translation note: annual literary presentation\/competition of Latin American works) in Quetzaltenango.\u00a0 Nor is there concern regarding the scarce number of publishing houses in the country.\u00a0 For anyone to wager the risk of producing your manuscript, you must be a well-established author, having won some international prize or having been awarded the National Prize for Literature.\u00a0 And add to this that the number of readers is very small and traditional promotional agencies do not assist you.\u00a0 And finally when some editor becomes interested in your work, that same work ought to be aimed at a captive audience, students at some private school, for example.\u00a0 It&#8217;s taken for granted that it will be consecrated, that is, free of erotica, immune to criticisms from the status quo, by the government or the religious.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are multiple reasons for writing this novel, perhaps the first hovers along the path of social critique of the violent ambience in which we live in this country.\u00a0 The peoples&#8217; struggle to defend what naturally and historically is theirs.\u00a0 And the other motivation, if one could call it that, is to fall in love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>This novel recounts the story of Ariane, who does community work in Ixc\u00e1n and Camilo, and who is persecuted by paramilitary forces.\u00a0 Is it your fictional account of reality or is it more reality wrapped up as fiction?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with most novels, fiction can only be the suit jacket in which you dress reality.\u00a0 Sometimes you only change protagonists&#8217; names and other times you simple obscure them.\u00a0 What doesn&#8217;t change, or rarely is transformed, are the scenes, as in this manuscript:\u00a0 Ixc\u00e1n and its rain forests in agony, the Basque country and its grey skies, another scene . . . .<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>What would you say are the major recurring themes of the book?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mayan world-view\/cosmovision, its mystery and magic charm inform almost every chapter.\u00a0 Also present is our rich pre-Hispanic legacy, and undoubtably the heart.\u00a0 Its scope is, purposely, a romantic novel, the work from the very first, was titled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Heart, the Rainforest and the Stars&#8211;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the arduous task of integrating the recurring themes within this perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Do you have a particular antedote related to \u00abEl valle de los corazones vac\u00edos\u00bb you could share with us?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I was in the midst of the task of looking for a publishing house that would share the risk of its publication, one of the foreigners working in the country, a responsible editor took the draft for a couple of months.\u00a0 Finally responding to one of my calls, he informed me he&#8217;d read \u00abthe book of short stories\u00bb but that it fell outside the national narrative.\u00a0 Another editor, also a foreigner, dismissed an assistant in charge of the project, though I don&#8217;t know why. \u00a0 The previous week the assistant had assured me that my book had been approved by the editorial board and that it would soon be published.\u00a0 When I went to pick up the manuscript they told me that it had been lost.\u00a0 Upon my insistance, later, they sent me photocopies of the original.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Where can people purchase your book?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is available in the major bookstores in the capital, Guatemala City.\u00a0 And of course, knowing there are many readers in city of Quetzaltenango, I hope it will be of interest to some bookshops there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During these times of pandemic I am also distributing it to residencial addressess (the new method).\u00a0 Interested people may write me at:\u00a0 filolibros@yahoo.com or through FaceBook messenger so we can agree to meet for purchase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Some final message you&#8217;d like to share with your readers?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thank you for the opportunity to put my work out there and for the invitation to all readers of the magazine to get to know it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Synopsis of El valle de los corazones vac\u00edos . . .<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The end of the 13th of B&#8217;akt\u00fan, a sacred date in the Mayan calendar, is nearing.\u00a0 It is the end of a cycle of more than 5000 years:\u00a0 the moment when many prophecies in the Mayan world-view will come true.\u00a0 They are linked to mystery of the movement of the stars.\u00a0 The same one that has marked the destiny of this ancient civilization.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ariane, a young Basque, travels to Guatemala planning to do community work with the Mayan populations excluded from development.\u00a0 In Ixc\u00e1n (where the heavens are born), the community is surrounded by a dying rain forest.\u00a0 The place to which groups have returned after being displaced by the arm conflict.\u00a0 She meets a young Guatemala, Camilo, who is being pursued by a sinister group of the governments armed forces.\u00a0 Ariane sees herself caught up in a whirlwind of intrigue that makes her a target of the paramilitary group who link her support for the\u00a0 community with its resistence and its defense of its territory against mining interests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scenes contrast the beauty of much diversity in the Mayan lands and the post-war divisiveness.\u00a0 All the drama is inundated with the mystical of Mayan world-view where time and mystery play important roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By EntreMundos Tell us a bit about yourself.\u00a0 Who is Jos\u00e9 Manuel Chac\u00f3n?
