{"id":9126,"date":"2021-09-27T12:00:01","date_gmt":"2021-09-27T20:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.entremundos.org\/revista\/?p=9126"},"modified":"2021-09-23T09:16:07","modified_gmt":"2021-09-23T17:16:07","slug":"delivering-healthcare-to-a-rural-community-the-work-of-renate-hansler-chocruz-clinic-in-momostenango","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.entremundos.org\/revista\/health\/delivering-healthcare-to-a-rural-community-the-work-of-renate-hansler-chocruz-clinic-in-momostenango\/","title":{"rendered":"Delivering Healthcare to a Rural Community: The Work of Renate Hansler&#8211;Chocruz Clinic in Momostenango"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Chocruz, Pamumus Region is in the village of Santa Ana, located in Momostenango, northeastern Guatemala.\u00a0 Many of its residents live in poverty conditions, unable to cover costs of basic necessities.\u00a0 Malnutrition among children has been a problem for years.\u00a0 Their growth and normal development are affected due to the scarcity of foodstuffs.\u00a0 Added to this problem are common ailments, i.e. intestinal infection and respiratory issues.\u00a0 Additionally, there&#8217;s no adequate family planning resulting in large families.\u00a0 None the less, state-provided healthcare is difficult to access.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given this environment, in March of 2012 a group of German students and locals organized to found an emergency and maternity clinic called Renate Hansler Clinic&#8211;Chocruz, thanks to assistance from the organization known as &#8220;Mirador&#8221;.\u00a0 The project promotes development to improve living conditions and overall good health for the population.\u00a0 The clinic offers prenatal and postnatal care to women in the community along with lay midwifery care.\u00a0 Similarly, according to Patricia Yolanda Tzoc Velasques, a nurse and the administrator of Chocruz Clinic, general medical care is offered.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The clinic serves children, young adults, men and women, essentially everyone in the area, and those living in the center of Momostenango, as well as neighboring communities.\u00a0 Clinic Chocruz has a work team committed to offering complete medical attention put together by a medical doctor, a certified midwife and a nurse who perform safe, reliable procedures at accessible costs between Q 5.00-Q 30.00.\u00a0 These are the clinical services provided:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">general consult<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prenatal and postnatal consult<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pediatric care<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gynecological consults<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatment of wounds<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suturing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy tests<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glucose level testing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urine sample tests<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years the project has achieved success and satisfaction:\u00a0 one of these is the ability to help people in need and to donate medicine to people who require it but don&#8217;t have the economic resources to purchase it.\u00a0 Because the medical team lives in the community, patients&#8217; confidence in them shows.\u00a0 Although the clinic offers general care, it has also been used as an emergency room provider:\u00a0 Patricia comments and mentions an example, &#8220;After the clinic first opened a woman arrived who was in labor.
