Promising Technology

BY ROSENDO CASTILLO /TRANSLATED BY DAVID HÖRHAGER

Artificial Intelligence (AI) stands as one of the most revolutionary and promising technologies of our time. Its application in the field of photography has opened up a world of possibilities for professionals and enthusiasts alike who wish to enhance their images, create stunning effects, or explore new forms of artistic expression.

AI can intervene in several ways to optimize the final result. Some of its applications include scene and object recognition, allowing cameras or smartphones to identify the subject and automatically adjust parameters such as exposure, white balance, ISO, and shooting mode. This way, we can capture well-exposed and focused photos without worrying about manual adjustments. Additionally, AI utilizes deep learning algorithms to enhance image resolution, dynamic range, noise, and detail. These algorithms can analyze millions of photos and learn to generate additional pixels, improving image quality. For instance, AI can be employed to digitally zoom in without losing sharpness or to capture photos in low-light conditions without introducing graininess. AI can also create special effects in photography, such as portrait mode (which blurs the background to highlight the subject), night mode (which combines multiple shots for a brighter image), or HDR mode (which merges multiple exposures to achieve a broader range of tones).

Processing and Editing

AI also plays a fundamental role in post-production, enabling us to perform complex and laborious tasks with just a few clicks or gestures. Some of these tasks include:

  1. Photo Retouching: Involves removing or correcting unwanted or defective elements from our images, such as stains, wrinkles, red eyes, cables, people, etc.
  2. Color and Lighting Enhancement: Adjusting brightness, contrast, saturation, tone, and temperature levels of photos to achieve a more natural or artistic look.
  3. Style and Composition Transformation: Radically changing the appearance of photos by applying filters or effects that mimic different artistic techniques like drawing, painting, collage, or pop art.

There are many applications and tools that utilize AI to facilitate photo capture, processing, and editing. Some of the most popular ones include:

Google Photos: A free application that allows us to store, organize, and share our photos in the cloud. It offers features like the editing assistant, smart albums, or suggested archive, helping us free up space by deleting duplicate or low-quality photos.

Adobe Photoshop: This is the most famous and comprehensive photo editing program in the market. It has both desktop and mobile versions, both of which are paid. Its AI-powered features include content-aware fill, the neural filter (which applies artistic effects or changes facial expressions), and super zoom (which allows us to enlarge images without losing quality).

Snapseed: A free application offering a powerful yet easy-to-use photo editor with advanced features. Its AI-powered functions include HDR Scape (which creates high dynamic range images), Portrait mode (which blurs the background and enhances people’s skin), and Perspective Tool (which corrects distortion and tilt in images).
